The Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics is one of three departments in the School of Mathematics and Physics. There are two Mathematics departments, the other being Pure Mathematics. Courses on Statistics and Operational Research are taught by the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. Mathematics undergraduates usually take courses in more than one of the Mathematics departments. The third department in the School is Physics and Astronomy.
Research in the School is carried out by research centres. Most of the academic staff of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics belong to the Centre for Theoretical and Computational Physics. But four members of staff belong to the Atomistic Simulation Centre, and one to the Astrophysics Research Centre.
